Sunday Round-Up

Hello from my new town! It is a weird feeling no longer living in my family home and being away from most of the people I know....in fact, ALL of the people I know minus 1 (albeit it a very important one). It feels different to moving away for university but it doesn't feel permanent yet. That'll probably take getting into the swing of things with the new job et al but so far, so good. It took precisely five people, two cars and a transit van to transport all of our stuff down here. That should probably read *my* stuff, since M's possessions were limited mainly to a couple of books, a chest of drawers and his clothes (not packed, just carried in the aforementioned drawers). Since the weekend we have acquired a lot more joint belongings, such as bed sheets, a giant straw laundry basket and a toaster. I've been busy getting to know the area this week, doing shopping and sorting out admin before my real job starts next week. I hope to be able to continue writing here as I usually do, although that may be less frequent to begin with than I would like. Anyway, without further ado, here's my Sunday round-up....

This week I have been....

Assembling :: flat-pack furniture

Buying :: bits and bobs for the new flat and work clothes

Eating :: with M each evening - what a treat! Also tried Five Guys for the first time, having heard such mixed reviews prior to trying. I really enjoyed it! Bit expensive (same kind of price as you would pay for Patty & Bun which is the superior burger...of all burgers ever, followed closely by Honest) but the chips are awesome (and you get loads), you can pick which burger size you'd like and the drink options are simply incredible. Yep *incredible*...

Drinking :: mixtures of all types of Fanta flavours; litres of tea

Reading :: a book about yoga, "Coming Up Roses" (Cath Kidston's business story) and a book about women and the suffrage movement

Having a love/hate relationship with :: not having wifi  in the flat! It is lovely to have more time to read, talk and play chess, but it has meant several trips to the library to sort out house admin.

Booking :: train tickets all over the place

Considering :: birthday plans

Enjoying :: having plants in the house...just a little Ikea one and a mint plant for the moment. Flowers are next on the list!

Please leave any tips for being a newbie in the workplace in the comments below! Hope you've all had a marvellous week - let me know what you did this weekend :)

Sunday Round-up

Good evening and happy Sunday. Sundays used to be the WORST day of the week because I used to spend the whole day doing homework. That seems to have now been replaced by blog and comfort related activities so Sundays are a great day in my book.

This morning, when my Mum poked her head around my door as she usually does each morning the first thing I said was "I'm so glad to see you!" because last night I had the second dream in about a week that I was participating in The Hunger Games. Last time, my dream's plot was fairly true to the book's storyline, but this time it had been tweaked a bit and we were transported into outer space and onto another planet. Having said that, I've only read book one (and not seen the films either) so don't tell me if I've just pre-empted how the story develops beyond the first part!

Anyway! Recently, I have been...

Looking at :: potential new homes! House-hunting is a unique mixture of stressful and so much fun - any tips for moving house? Also, somewhere fun to have cocktails in south or south-west London on Friday night - suggestions much appreciated for this too.

Getting excited about :: furniture!!

Worrying about :: finding the right place; furniture!!

Wanting to visit :: Marina Abramovic's exhibition in London - have you been? Would you recommend it?

Eating :: peaches; at Turtle Bay in Southampton; at The Oriental in Birmingham; pizza at home and with M

Reading :: Everyday Sexism by Laura Bates

Enjoying :: hanging out with my sister in her house and visiting the library in Birmingham (check out those panoramics above!)

Practising :: yoga; motorway driving...

What was the loveliest thing you did this week? And tell me, have you had any weird dreams recently?

Sunday Round-up

A quick transportation back to Paris in springtime

This week I have been //

Reading :: oasis - guys, guys!!! My best friend has started up her blog again!! I can't even begin to describe how exciting I find this - I can now talk about blog-related stuff to another human being FACE-TO-FACE! I'm still wiggling with joy. Anyway, please be kind, have a look and leave some love - Cathy is an excellent writer, a marvellous hunter of fascinating things and the ultimate bookworm so I can GUARANTEE you will come away from her space feeling educated and nourished.

Listening to :: Daughter, Arctic Monkeys, Desert Island Discs podcasts for Zadie Smith (can you believe she wrote the brilliant "White Teeth" aged 22?!? 22!!) and Rankin.

Taking :: Cosmo to the vet for his booster jab

Trying :: to find somewhere to move to

Liking :: Sally's Wonderful Wednesday because I'm emotionally invested in her ability to craft the dreamiest of blog posts // Hayley-Eszti's unique and thought-provoking take on hearing music //  Sophie's collection of photos of two very lovely blogger faces // Leona's heart-warming tribute

Eating :: Ben & Jerry's ice-cream (two flavours at the same time because it was buy one get one free and there's no time like the present), fish and chips whilst catching up with friends

Missing :: being in Spain with M (you can bet your last Smartie that there will be travel related posts up soon!)

Tell me about your week - we must have so much to catch up on!

Sunday Round-up with a difference

I am writing this in advance so I actually can't tell you what I've been doing this week. Not much a round-up then is it you might be thinking... You would be right.

Except I can tell you one thing...if you are reading this then that means I am currently sitting somewhere extremely sunny in Spain, with a plane to catch this evening again to the next destination. I would expect that I have already eaten a fair bit of paella, acquired browner shoulders and made at least a million embarrassing mistakes with my attempts at speaking Spanish.

I'll be here for a little while, hopefully giving my batteries a thoroughly-needed recharge. In the meantime, if there's anywhere in northern Spain you believe I must visit without fail, then do drop me an e-mail or tweet (see my Contact page) or leave a comment below.

Sending you all the happiest of Sunday wishes.

Sunday Round-up

This week, I have been...

Listening to :: Chet Faker - goodness me, this was the perfect antidote to a weird old day I was having earlier this week. The kind of thing you want on loud, with nobody else around so you can just fall into the beats and soul-nourishing waves, and feel.

Meeting :: a role model of mine - Laura Bates. I've written before about my admiration for her and how important her work is - you can find it here.

Eating :: sushi, katsu curry, pancakes, burgers, sweet potato

Watching :: tennis and football on television

Celebrating :: 250 Bloglovin' followers - thank you ever so much

Playing :: around with the awesome camera on the Nokia Lumia 1520 I've been sent to try. Photos above were taken on this.

Recording :: a few videos which may never make it to the online world but which will hopefully be of interest to myself years down the line.

Buying :: the last bits and bobs for my trip :)

Sharing :: this video with lots of people - I know it isn't new but it seems to have made its way into most conversations I've had this week. How does she manage to keep her cool?!

Tell me your favourite thing that happened this week.

Sunday Round-up

Best shoes! (Source unknown)
This week I have been...

Reading: "The Hobbit" still...I'm not really loving it if I am honest. I read somewhere that you should never settle so I might not carry on reading this...unless you make a compelling argument to the contrary!
Also, this article on abortion by Caitlin Moran. I don't think anybody could know what they would do unless they experience the situation themselves, but I certainly disagree with it not being an option.
Eating: the most delicious Byron burger and Oreo milkshake EVER.
Drinking: mojitos to say bye to my BFF who is going travelling for the first half of this year :'(
Navigating: the streets and buses of London
Laughing: a lot more than usual
Wearing: shiny new brogues...ahhh is there anything better??!
Resting: for a large chunk of the week
Celebrating: health
Grateful to: Tori for sharing this post on her beautiful blog
Inspired by: this beautiful post by Tyler Knott Gregson.
Rushed for: time. See this previous post!

Tomorrow evening, I am going to see Bridget Christie for the second time and say goodbye properly to the aforementioned travelling best friend. I'm really looking forward to it and dreading it at the same time!! I guess over the next few months my studying will be receiving a LOT more attention until she is back...

Sunday Round-up (Links Edition) PS. I'm selling lenses

Original source unknown. Found on Pinterest.

This week has seen a hasty attempt to get my studying back on track before the start of the new term tomorrow. It was pointed out to me this week that although I've now completed a whole term of my course, I do only have six months left of it and I just know it is going to fly by. The second half of the year is going to bring so many challenges which are beginning to scare me as up until now, they've been too far into the future for me to think about realistically. All will be revealed in due course!

Anyhow, in a similar fashion to a post I did a few weeks ago, here are some little internet nuggets I'd like to share with you this week...

- Rosie's post about peace, contentment and making little changes for a more fulfilling life really resonated with me. I really like her style of writing - so accessible yet very intelligent.

- 52 Things 52 Weeks is a blog I came across via the PostSecret Twitter account. It's the documentation of a year-long challenge to embrace one new thing a week. It has certainly inspired me to think more carefully about how I spend my time.

- Annie's One Good Thing a Day post reminded me of a calendar I used to have when I was 18 on which I would write a good memory of each day. I loved looking back in the years afterwards and seeing what I did on each day which made me happy. It's funny how there are so many things you will do in your life that you will actually forget you did. Even more reason to follow Annie's example, I think!

- Flora's new blog is utterly delightful. She has such a lovely way with words and I'm really enjoying each description posted.

- Whenever you feel down about not getting something quite right, or not feeling content with the result of your creative efforts, read this on Louise's blog "Beside the Danube". It might just make you feel better.

By the way, I am thinking of selling my Canon lenses. I have a Sigma (for Canon) 70-300mm and a Canon 18-55mm. Please send me an e-mail if you are at all interested in purchasing either or have any questions. I also have a temperamental Canon 350d body.

Sunday Round-up

Perfect day for a wedding in London yesterday
Today doesn't feel like a Sunday at all because no days around this time feel like a specific day. In fact I almost forgot that Sundays are my Sunday Round-up post day. What makes a day feel like a day? Sundays are usually sleepy, as today was. Sundays are usually surrounded by family, as today was. Sundays are usually peaceful and unnerving all at once, with the impending doom of Monday madness lurking. As today was. So why didn't today feel like a Sunday? Strange one.

This week I have been:

Reading: these interesting pieces on grief, Dove and abortion.

Shedding tears at: this video of Beyonce making a dream come true for a lovely little girl and this video of an inspiring love story (thank you lovely Christina for showing me the latter)

Watching: Raised by Wolves, written by Caitlin Moran and her sister Caroline. It's a sitcom based on their upbringing and the pilot was well worth a watch. I also finished watching the final series of Him & Her. Good stuff.

Cooking: a Christmas dinner for eight. Best one I've done yet, didn't burn too many things, only messed up the timings sliiiightly. Thumbs up.

Showing: American visitors around London. It was fun to go around the sights taking pictures of somebody who actually wanted photographs for once!! (Blogger problem??!)

Wearing: my new penguin onesie, complete with penguin feet. On Christmas day whilst I cooked, and for about three days straight afterwards too. Kitten was pretty terrified of me for a while, not least because I was the same colour as him, but he's warmed to it now. Cosiest outfit ever. Unfortunately doubt there'll ever be the occasion to wear it outside these four walls, but I'm gonna be working on that...

Looking forward to: wearing my NMP3 t-shirt, finally!!

I'm off to have a curry with some school friends this evening and will have some more family time over the next couple of days. How do you plan to spend your last few days of 2013?

Sunday Round-up

From here

This week I have been:

Listening to: London Grammar (you're all going to be shocked any Sunday I don't include them in my round-up now aren't you?!), Bastille, the Mumford&Sons/Laura Marling collaboration with the Dharohar Project, Daughter - all the good'uns.

Fascinated by: this story of a boy who paid 4p for a £600 supermarket shop and donated it all to charity. What incredible initiative shown by somebody so young. Be active!

Enamoured of: the Educating Yorkshire Christmas Special. The story of Musharaf and Mr Burton makes me cry every time (5:41 onwards).

Admiring: Malala Yousafzai's UN speech. Oh to be that articulate.

Training: my kitten. He passed level 1 of Beeta's Bootcamp this morning and now holds the title for Master Hunter of 2013. I shook his paw to congratulate him and he has been celebrating this afternoon by skating in the sink, eating lamb and sleeping by the radiator.

Completing: law exams.

Taking: a rest from law and scrap-booking whilst listening to inspiring women on Youtube

Watching: "Celeste and Jesse Forever" on Netflix. I hadn't watched a film in a little while so treated myself on Friday night with a full two hours wrapped up in a blanket on the sofa with this film. It was better than I thought it was going to be. A half-refreshing story at least.

Dreaming of: Paris.

Sunday Roundup (Links edition)

From here.

Instead of the usual "here's what I've been eating, drinking, listening to" spiel, this week I'd like to share some links of interest with you that I have come across (mostly via Twitter). So grab a cup of tea and some biscuits, have a read and let me know what you make of this list...

- This list of two-worded advice  - which one resonates with you? What would you say?
- Sticking to the momentary theme of advice, Rachael shared Mary Schmich's take on life. I really like it.
- Horrendous views from Richard Drax MP in response to a constituent asking if he would support the No More Page 3 campaign. I'm glad I didn't get the same response when I spoke to my MP about this but blimey, this is disgraceful.
- Are you a people pleaser? This article was a nice little reminder that it's okay to look out for yourself.
- This one's a bit naughty, but only because it's to something I featured in... the final instalment of the "Why I Started Blogging" series on The Bloggers' Lounge.
- The confidence this girl oozes, especially in the context of the words she speaks, is inspiring and should be applauded. I wish every girl understood that it is okay to be passionate about this enough to speak out. It affects half the population after all. Passivity is awful.
- Cat's crafty tutorials are always awesome, but this one is particularly stunning.
- A motivating little boost from Jessica about why comparing yourself to others is a pointless exercise.
- Freya's Tale of Two Rings is just lovely. A perfect sentimental tribute.

Sunday Roundup

from here

Listening to: London Grammar, Daughter, Damien Rice

Focusing: with Rainy Mood

Admiring: these perfectly-timed photos

Drinking: plenty of tea, too much black coffee to meet deadlines in my half-recovered state

Eating: a bag of treats from M&S a friend of mine brought over last weekend to brighten up being at home

Signing up for: the 2014 Blogger Challenge, hosted here - are any of you taking part?

Reading: SRA Accounts Rules. Thrilling. Also, this incredibly insightful article by Christopher Hitchens about Iran. I wish there were more positive pieces like this written about Iran. I contributed with this piece here (which was also my first post on this blog)

Feeling: sad that we still live in a world where a person revealing their sexuality makes headline news

Thinking: that as a person in my early-20s, I have not experienced anything even a fraction as impacting in politics as those in South Africa, and many other places worldwide have. It is pure luck which society we are born into. Having relatives my age in Iran is a constant reminder of this.

Have you encountered any revelations this week?

Sunday Roundup

Found here via Pinterest
This week I have been:

Buying: books. I annoyed myself by forgetting some paperwork when I visited the hospital earlier this week which meant that I had to make the hour round trip again later in the day. To cheer myself up, I popped into a charity shop on my walk home where they were doing a deal on their books - 4 for £1.99. So naturally I picked up eight and carried them home in my arms like my many paper babies. It was such a treat and I am chuffed that I picked up so many good titles including....Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling, White Teeth by Zadie Smith and Any Human Heart by William Boyd (the TV series of this was magnificent). All in excellent condition as well I might add.

Reading: The Hobbit which I also picked up in my spree. I've never read this before but my two BFs (boyfriend and best friend) love these books so I thought I'd see what the fuss is all about.

Practising: advocacy. I had my advocacy mock this week and after the way the practice had gone the week before, I was worried it was going to be just as awful. I'm pleased to report it was a million times better, I passed and now feel confident for the real thing which is in a month. Moral of the story - mocks exist for a reason.

Listening: to London Grammar (well obviously), Florence and the Machine and the Arctic Monkeys.

Spending: time with my best friends in the whole wide world <3 <3

Eating: Dairy Milk Fruit and Nut and the world's best chocolate and vanilla cheesecake. You lucky Instragram followers will have seen...ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. They were meant to give me energy to keep going with my uni work but knocked me out instead and fell asleep uninterrupted the whole night through. Think I found the cure for sleeplessness guys...

I may be a little absent next week for reasons I will reveal in due course but keep happy and strong everyone. I'm a big advocate of what Ovid's said up there xxxx

This week I have been....
Planning: the In Thing for Cancer Research
Listening to: London Grammar, Daughter and Laura Marling
Watching: Made in Chelsea
Smiling at: finding my blog on Bloglovin's list of up and coming personal blogs
Worrying: an awful lot
Drinking: orange flavoured hot chocolates to warm up my insides
Buying: (and building) a desk from Ikea

I was meant to be in Berlin this week seeing the Arctic Monkeys but the silver lining to not being able to go after all is that I had more time to do uni work and time for a date with M.

What was your silver lining this week?

Sunday Roundup

This week was half-term. The perfect opportunity to unwind a little, but mostly to get ahead with work in anticipation of a busy couple of months ahead. I did also get to catch up with some friends so it was a fairly balanced week. As always, however, it has reached Sunday and I feel like I could have done so much more. Any time I wasn't doing work, I felt guilty for not doing any. Are we ever content with our efforts? Do we expect too much from ourselves? Or is that just the Sunday feeling?

Other than studying, this week I was...

Reading: oh who am I kidding, I was reading about Business Accounts this week. I need to factor in some alone time with normal books again.

Listening to: London Grammar's album on repeat. Sally and I are in love with them and the voice and just oh my goodness. The album just grabs my soul and twists it into pretty shapes.

Eating: burgers. Out. Twice. Whoops.

Wishing I was eating: a Patty & Bun burger. Is it really worth queuing in the cold for? If you assure me it is, I will wait.

Watching: Midnight in Paris. I enjoyed the concept and it was very typically Woody Allen. It was also interesting to see the lovely Rachel McAdams play a character who isn't very likeable. The beautiful imagery also made me miss my friend, Anj, who is in Paris and made me even more excited to go and visit her.

Drinking: THIS (a delicious blend of lychee, pineapple, rum, mint, lime, FIRE AND MAGIC) at B Soho which is a great bar off of Oxford Street, complete with live music from 10pm. All the songs were the acoustic best bits of all your favourites that you would compile for a playlist, cleverly linked by song title or theme. Lets go together sometime and sing along.

Thinking about: what presents to give people who are impossible to buy for.

Celebrating: (with burgers) the end of a rough few months for M.

Enjoying: the company that a pet brings. The ultimate conundrum, however, is that he is so terribly naughty but also so very cute when he is naughty. To be cross, or not to be cross!

Catching up with: old house-mates, old uni friends and old school friends.

Excited about: hosting the #lbloggers chat tonight!

Sunday Roundup

This week I have been:

Plotting: with M's friends to surprise him for his birthday! It has been so fun sneaking around being secretive and the result was just brilliant as he didn't suspect a thing! More about that in another post soon.

Listening to: Muse - The 2nd Law. What a fantastically underrated album.

Reading: about how to do advocacy without melting into a horrible mess

Eating: CAKE CAKE CAKE

Drinking: flasks of tea. My Thermos keeps my tea hot hot hot from 6.45am all the way until 4pm and whilst I kind of understand how insulation works, I do still think "HOW?!" every time.

Watching: Stacey Dooley's documentary about Cancun and the Great British Bake Off Final! I love Frances' creations so I was pleasantly surprised when she won. Her wedding cake was stunning compared to the others and the whole way through the series I was constantly impressed with how clever her ideas are. You can imagine how excited I was when she retweeted something I tweeted her as well!

Playing: chess with M because it's up there in our top 3 favourite pastimes. Oh and playing with the kitten of course (but that probably goes without saying).

What did you get up to this week?

Sunday Roundup

*I feel like a kid in a toy-shop when I'm in a florists or walk by one. These flowers all look so perfect together.

This week I have been....

Listening to: Laura Marling's newest album. I find the songs all very similar but luckily I like them so my ears and soul appreciate it.

Reading: still on "Living Dolls" but my friend very kindly bought me a collection of short stories by Oscar Wilde so that'll be my next mission. I think books are such thoughtful gifts.

Impressed by: how powerfully and beautifully this girl speaks

Eating: milk bottles, Snickers ice cream and other things not made for cold weather but definitely fanciable.

Drinking: Mango and Cinammon tea and occasionally Camomile, because you need warming up after an ice-cream....obviously.

Learning: about myself and what matters to me, as well as corporation tax and company directors.

Intrigued by: fascinating and informative scans of my insides as shown and explained to me by my surgeon.

Getting my head around: diagnoses, plans for the future and my capabilities.

Have you learnt anything about yourself recently?

Sunday Roundup

This week I have been...

Reading: Living Dolls (finally plucked up the courage to read it on the train as the cover is fairly embarrassing). Today I picked up Tina Fey's "Bossypants" in the British Heart Foundation shop so I am looking forward to reading that too. I really struggle to leave a charity shop without buying a book. Where's your favourite charity shop?

Buying: comfortable clothes. Uni Qlo is so underrated - if you have one near you, I URGE you to go and get yourself some warm, comfy leggings. They're like a constant hug to my legs :) As one of my legs is bigger than the other, as a result of DVT, wearing trousers is pretty much a no-go for me any more which is annoying because I have the most wonderful pair of brand new Gap jeans sleeping in my wardrobe which I bought a few weeks before the leg decided to balloon. It's just a silly, little thing but that's why my new clothes have made me happy this weekend!

Eating: okra for the first time. My Mum was putting them in a stew so I had a little try of them and they're delicious! Like funny little baby courgette peppers. Also, today, I was meeting a BFF for lunch and as I met her at the station, I said "I think we probably both have the same place in mind" and off we wandered, without uttering a word about where we were going and ended up in Wagamama. It's part of the unspoken code.

Walking: on Wimbledon Common (as pictured above). Perfect afternoon. I love wearing trainers - I wish they matched with everything!

Listening to: Regina Spektor on my walks to uni.

Playing: tennis! Without running... pretty strange concept I know but it is working so far! I loved the fresh air and the feeling of picking up an old skill.

Have you tried anything new recently or starting doing something you used to love again?

Sunday Roundup

Found on Pinterest. Originally here

This week, I have been...

Reading: "Living Dolls - The Return of Sexism" by Natasha Walker. I'm on Chapter 2 and the stuff it talks about riles me up already. I think I'll feel pretty angry by the end of the book but it is certainly eye-opening. I love that I have finally found people and writing that echo the thoughts I've been having for so many years but didn't realise were perfectly legitimate opinions which were only belittled by the disgrace of societal norms.

Watching: Modern Family and this wonderful interview with Caitlin Moran.

Listening to: Daughter (I think they have featured in most of my recent Sunday posts actually...I urge you to have a listen)

Cooking: homemade chickpea burgers

Drinking: peppermint tea by the MugTheSizeOfMyHead-ful.

Learning: how to calculate income tax and trading profit. I'm not going to lie - I entered my Tax class the other day with a 50-75% chance I was going to cry...(Maths?! Done by lawyers?! Whatttt?!) but the good news is that I didn't and I think I have almost got my head around it now! For some reason, I equate not being able to do these calculations with me being stupid; the last thing that made me feel that way was Chemistry lessons during AS Levels, when I actually would cry after most lessons because I just didn't get it. I wonder whether that's the doing of the pressure experienced at a grammar school.

Wishing: I felt in control of things. Much like how I'd imagine the lady in the picture above feels. I love how strong she looks.

What are you wishing for these days?
